WOMEN 我們 (2012) is a documentary about the creation of the exhibition of the same title that opened in 2011 in Shanghai and now on view at San Francisco Chinese Cultural Center.
我們 in Mandarin means “we”, while it stransliteration is WOMEN. Featuring visual arts by diverse female, male, and LGBTQ artists,WOMEN 我們, as its name suggests, shows how “a purely feminist exploration and expression of feminism in Chinese visual culture” evolves to a broad examination of “gay and transgender visibility, and sexual identity in China”.
Director Walker Lee follows the creation of this exhibition and the involvement of an array of artists, young professionals and college students in the project. The documentary WOMEN 我們reveals the backstage stories of the participants, covering the gender-oriented artistic practices as well as the emerging social campaigns on the dynamic cultural forefront in Shanghai. Following the camera through urban texture and social matrix in Shanghai, the film presents a symposium of narratives of those whose life stories are intertwined with social gender issues: from women artists, feminist scholars, queer activists to queer young professionals who are locating and relocating their identities and affects in the ever-changing environment.A reflexive and engaging visual record of the efforts to celebrate queer identity and visibility, the film complements the exhibition in providing the contexts in which the queer identity (or identities) has blended into and negotiated with the locality of the largest metropolis in China.
